I stood next to the Guardian’s Guild table in the middle of the Hydhexa courtyard, Sven at my side and Sari behind the table. After meeting up with them at the guild hall, it had been a silent walk to Hydhexa and quick work setting up our booth. Kinicia had arrived just before the first students had begun to trickle in and meander around, but she barely stuck around the table. Instead, she claimed her ‘talents’ were better put to use ‘working the crowd’—her way of making wandering around and handing out leaflets sound important. It didn’t matter to me. She could’ve spent the whole day locked in a broom closet for all I cared, as long as I didn’t have to listen to her.

My gaze moved over the nearby tables, taking in the sight of guild representatives I recognized from previous years. Across the courtyard, I could see the black banner with golden trim and bits of iron chains that marked the Curse Breakers Guild. It was one of the booths I’d hung around more than others at the past two Guild Days, mostly because Curse Breakers tended to know more about forbidden knowledge and dark arts magic theory than most others. Talking to them off and on throughout the day was the closest I’d ever come to being able to openly look into more restricted topics.

The fact that a lot of people weren’t overly curious about Curse Breakers, beyond maybe a few quick questions, due to the potential dangers the job had was just an added bonus. No one with a bit of common sense could look at the Curse Breakers’ Guild Master and think the job was a safe bet. And that meant no one could add ‘Hunter Wildmoor practices dark arts magic’ to the rumor mill.

As the thought crossed my mind, I couldn’t help but look at the leader of the Curse Breakers guild, Dakota Pargoetia. He’d been the Guild Master of the Curse Breakers Guild for at least the past two years, probably longer, and had attended Guild Day as a representative just as long. Judging by looks, he was at least ten years younger than my uncle and intimidating as far as the student body of Hydhexa was concerned. I’d overheard enough conversations where they’d mentioned him in the days following Guild Day.

I couldn’t really blame them for being apprehensive, especially not the level one students. A guy in a black cloak with an eyepatch covering his right eye wasn’t what anyone would think of when they heard the word ‘approachable.’ Sometimes, I’d wondered if he’d actually lost his eye to guild duties.

Despite his appearance, I’d learned that Guild Master Pargoetia wasn’t unpleasant to have a conversation with and was more than willing to share his knowledge. If I’d had more time or the chance to meet with him privately, I would’ve loved for him to talk more in-depth about what he knew. There weren’t many books I’d found that went into the nuances
